Q:Can you separate the smaller boxes ?
A:Yes you can they have Velcro tabs at the back for stability but you can configure them as suits your needs
Q:Is the top surface sturdy enough to sit a plant or sonething heavy on or is it flimsy?
A:Hi yes its sturdy enough to sit things on but nothing too heavy. A small/medium sized plant should be ok in a lightweight pot. Its reinforced fabric so would start to sag if anything too heavy was placed on it over a period of time. My son has books few books laying down on his most of the time. Hope that helps.
